Professional liability insurance serves as your foundation, but the value extends far beyond basic coverage. Wisconsin Lawyers Mutual Insurance Company understands that modern legal practice demands comprehensive support that addresses both expected challenges and unexpected complications that emerge during complex cases.
Our approach combines traditional coverage with strategic partnerships and specialized benefits designed specifically for attorneys. These insurance services create a comprehensive support system that protects your practice while enhancing your ability to serve clients effectively.
Added Value Beyond Your Coverage
These benefits are included at no additional premium. The total amount payable for any or all of these additional benefits is limited to $10,000 per policy period.
Defendant’s Reimbursement Coverage: When You’re on the Other Side
Sometimes you find yourself defending rather than pursuing claims. Defendant’s reimbursement coverage applies if a professional liability claim made against you develops into a lawsuit requiring you to attend a trial, mediation, or arbitration hearing, up to $250 per day.
If you are required to attend a multi-day trial, this benefit can help cover the financial impact of time away from billable work as well as certain out-of-pocket costs associated with your attendance.
Grievance Counsel Coverage: Professional Defense When It Matters Most
Responding to a grievance can be a serious matter requiring careful attention and experienced representation. This coverage provides limited reimbursement for reasonable legal fees charged by a lawyer, other than one insured under your policy, to defend you in a grievance proceeding.
The grievance must allege professional misconduct in the performance of professional services for others. For example, a client may file a complaint with a disciplinary authority claiming that you failed to communicate key developments in their case. Even if no lawsuit is filed, you may still need to retain independent counsel to respond appropriately. In that situation, this benefit can help reimburse the reasonable legal fees associated with your defense.
This coverage does not apply to client fee disputes or to grievances arising from intentional, dishonest, fraudulent, criminal, or malicious acts. Payments made under this benefit do not reduce your policy’s limit of liability, and no deductible applies.
Subpoena Coverage: Response Support
Attorneys may occasionally receive subpoenas requiring them to produce documents or provide testimony related to matters involving their clients or prior work. Even when you are not a party to the case, responding appropriately can require legal guidance.
Subpoena coverage provides reimbursement to the named insured for reasonable fees and costs of legal services charged by a lawyer (other than the lawyer insured under the policy) who receives a subpoena related to a wrongful act covered by the policy, provided the insured has not been retained and is not being requested to provide expert testimony.
Continuing Legal Education: Staying Current in a Changing Profession
Legal education requirements continue expanding as practice areas become more specialized and regulatory frameworks evolve rapidly. WILMIC supports this through access to sponsored seminars focused on practice management and reducing malpractice risk.
In addition, policyholders receive Mutually Speaking, WILMIC’s official newsletter, delivered by email. The newsletter provides updates on WILMIC news along with timely information and insights related to loss prevention.
Premium Credits: Recognizing Risk Management Excellence
WILMIC also recognizes long-term relationships and strong claims history through premium credits. Policyholders may receive a loyalty credit based on their years insured with us, as well as credits applied for claims-free history.
Strategic Partnership Value
In addition to policy benefits, WILMIC policyholders gain access to trusted partner organizations that offer tools and services designed to support modern legal practice.
Through partnerships with providers, such as Querious and Spellbook, policyholders can access tools and services designed to support modern legal practice. These tools are designed to complement your practice by supporting a range of day-to-day legal practice needs.
Building Long-Term Practice Stability
These combined benefits create a foundation for sustainable practice growth. Comprehensive coverage reduces financial uncertainty, while educational resources support skill development and adaptation to changing legal markets.
Our commitment extends beyond claims payment to include genuine partnership in your professional success. This approach recognizes that strong practices benefit clients, the profession, and the broader community we all serve.
